thumbnail cache

Windows XP stores a "thumbnail" of graphic images or the first frame of the video and makes it into an oversized icon for the file. Those files can either be created each time you access the folder, or they can be cached. The thumbnail caches on systems with a large number of image and video files can slow the process down significantly.
  1. navigate the registry to
    1. HKLM
    2. Software
    3. Microsoft
    4. Windows
    5. Advanced
  2. change the setting
    • type= DWORD
    • name= "DisableThumbnailCache"
    • value=
      • 0 - there are few graphic files or the hard disk space is of no concern
      • 1 - there are many graphic files or disk space is low
