unattended installation

When installing a Windows system, you need to answer a lot of questions which could be difficult when you are installing on several computers that are identical and the answers would be the same.

You can use a text file to specify those answers and let install without having to sit around waiting for the next question.

The file, 'unattend.txt', can be built by Windows itself using the "setup manager" utility.

This utility is in the "support\tools" directory in your Windows XP CD.

  1. Unzip the file which will extract the file "deploy.cab" file onto your hard drive.
  2. Double click 'setupmgr' to start the setup manager wizard.
  3. There will be a file "unattend.txt" in the same directory.
  4. Rename this file to "winnt.sif" and copy it to a formatted floppy disk.
  5. Insert the floppy disk when you start the installation.
